Day 1, Reykjavík city and Vök Baths
Your guide will greet you at your accommodation in Reykjavík or we can arrange a private pick up at the international airport.
It’s important to explore our capital and if you need to buy anything before heading out to the countryside then this is the time to do so if you have not already. Your guide will be happy to give you advice and show you around. We will then be heading to the domestic airport in Reykjavík in the afternoon to fly across the country to our destination for the coming days. After arriving in the town of Egilsstaðir we will head straight to the nature baths Vök, where we will soak our self in hot geothermal water and have a welcome drink.
We will then have dinner in one of many restaurants in town before going to our farmhouse in the countryside.
Day 2, World of Elves and Colourful Puffins
The route to Borgarfjörður east will lead us through a rough but spectacular landscape; we will have a beautiful view over Héraðsflói bay and colourful mountains. Our hike of the day will lead us to one of many mountaintops with a spectacular view over the whole area, we will then find our way to the town of Borgarfjörður, called Bakkagerði. We will have a late lunch at a local owned restaurant called Álfacafé or coffee house of the Elves, this little remote town of Bakkagerði is known for its elves. You should ask your guide to get some idea of these Icelandic myths. Iceland is home to one of the world's largest colonies of puffins and Borgarfjörður is one of their many breeding grounds. We hope to get a glimpse of this colourful little bird on this day.
Day 3, Hike in crowd less wilderness and relax in a Geothermal Public pool
After we have breakfast we will head out for some more hiking adventures and exploring of the mountains in our area. Smjörfjöll or Butter Mountains is a name for the mountains between a fishing village called Vopnafjörður and the region of Jökulsárshlíð where our farm house is. North of them is the pass of Hellisheiði with the road leading to the fishing village Vopnafjörður. The pass is an elevated one, up to 730 m offering a beautiful view across the Héraðsflói bay. From here we will head to an unknown hiking area with colourful mountains and hidden valleys to explore.
After our stroll in the mountains, the road will lead us to a geothermal pool close by Vopnafjörður town.
Day 4, Crown jewels of the north
Today we will pack our small bags and head further north. Driving over the mountain- passes, and plateaus, and find ourselves a farm to rest and have refreshments in a traditional style.
Next is Vatnajökull National Park, and do a must stop at the famous waterfalls Selfoss and Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Then we will find our way down Jökulsárgljúfur to Hljóðaklettar or The Whispering Cliffs. Those are a unique rock formation even for Iceland and then we will explore the extraordinary Ásbyrgi canyon. Here we will put our hiking boots on and do some hiking and yes this is also said to be the Capital of the Hidden people (Elves).
Our accommodation is close by and there we will have dinner and enjoy the view over the North Atlantic Ocean.
Day 5, Lake Mývatn nature reserve and hiking
While we drive through Húsavík town we will keep our eyes open hoping to catch a glimpse of whales out in the bay of Skjálfandi. We will arrive at Lake Mývatn and have a stroll in one of the many hikes that the area offers. Lake Mývatn is a veritable paradise for bird watchers and is probably best known for its unique duck species composition. After our walk, we will have the option on doing more hiking in this hiking paradise or an optional 1-hour horseback riding tour next to Lake Mývatn. Then we will find our way through the highlands to our farmhouse for the night.
Day 6, Highlands of the east and Reindeers
Hallormsstaður forest is considered to be Icelands´ largest forest, it covers up to 740 hectares most of which is native birch. The majestic Hengifoss is one of Icelands´ highest waterfalls. There is a colourful rock face surrounding the waterfall. We will have to hike up to get a closer look at this beast. After lunch we will keep going further up to the highlands to get a great view over Mt. Snæfell where reindeers can frequently be spotted in this area. After that we will be heading towards a mountain hut for a natural pool that is said to contain water with healing powers, or at least so our old folk stories say. We will then drive back to our countryside farm house for the night.
Day 7, Departure day and Reykjavík
Today we will say goodbye to this charming area and head to Iceland’s capital Reykjavík. When arriving in Reykjavík your guide will drop you off at your accommodation in Reykjavík and say goodbye.
You will have some free time in Reykjavík, for shopping or/ and exploring the town. We recommend going to Hallgrímskirkja church and head up to its tower to see Reykavíks´ beautiful scenery. You cannot imagine how incredible it is to see all these different roof colors of our capital.
